Steve Backley sports biography
With 7 major championship Gold medals, 3 world records, and as the only British athlete to have won 3 consecutive Olympic medals, Steve Backley finally hung up his javelin at the Olympic Games in Athens, showing he is still one of the world’s best by placing 4th in the final.
Steve has been one of Britain’s most consistent and popular athletes for over a decade now and is firmly established as one of the all time greats of his sport having been ranked in the world top ten for javelin every year between 1989 and 2002.A constant fixture in the national athletics team, standing on podiums and setting world records, Steve is the only British track and field competitor to win medals at three different Olympic Games – Barcelona, Atlanta and Sydney.
Backley first made his mark winning silver at the 1988 Junior World Championships and breaking the world junior record in the same year. He went on in his first two years as a senior athlete to be the world’s number one javelin thrower, the first time ever for a British athlete and in 1989 claimed the UK and Commonwealth. Steve now concentrates his attention on new business ventures including Steve Backley Communications, corporate motivational speaking, sports commentary and a range of other media and television projects.

In a competition for a train to be named after a well know athlete to go into the new Olympic 2012 site, Steve was the most voted for Olympian with over 30% of votes. The launch for the Steve Backley train will be in December 2009.
